What is Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT)?
CGNAT is a technology used by internet service providers (ISPs) to share a single public IP address among multiple customers, helping to conserve the limited availability of IPv4 addresses. As a result, your modem or router will be assigned a private IP address, which your ISP will then translate to a shared public IP address, enabling your internet access.
Potential Issues with CGNAT
While CGNAT allows more people to access the internet, it can sometimes cause connectivity problems with your setup.
Recommended Settings Adjustments for a Smooth Experience
To minimize potential issues with CGNAT, follow these simple steps:
For Most Devices:
- Update Your Transport Type:
- Change the Transport Type to TCP.
- Adjust Your Registration Length:
- Set the Registration Length to 5 minutes (300 seconds) or less.
For Devices with Limited Configuration Options (e.g., Fritzbox):
- Leave the Transport Type as is:
- Keep the Transport Type set to UDP (if it cannot be changed).
- Adjust Your Registration Length:
- Set the Registration Length to 1 minute (60 seconds) or less.
