SIP Trunks vs CrazyPBX Extensions: Understanding the Difference

2 min. readlast update: 02.27.2025

SIP Trunks

SIP Trunks are designed to be used with PBX (Private Branch Exchange) systems. They provide a connection between your PBX and the public telephone network.
Key Characteristics:
  • Primarily intended for use with PBX systems
  • Limited functionality when used directly with devices
  • When used with softphones or IP phones directly, features like call transfer and hold are unavailable
  • These advanced features only become available when the SIP Trunk connects to a PBX
  • Affordable option for basic inbound and outbound calling

CrazyPBX Extensions

CrazyPBX Extensions provide enhanced functionality as they're part of a managed PBX solution.
Key Features:
  • Ability to put callers on hold
  • Call transfer capabilities
  • Advanced features such as call queues
  • Complete telephony solution without requiring a separate PBX
  • You need one extention per device

System Features

It's important to note that the system has two separate feature sets:
  • Ring Groups
  • IVRs (Interactive Voice Response systems)
  • Other PBX features
These features operate differently depending on whether you're using SIP Trunks or CrazyPBX Extensions. Make sure you are using the correct system corresponding to your service type (SIP Trunks or Extensions) to access the appropriate feature set.
